|You know how those “slick” marketers like to suck you into an ad by offering to “reveal” some “secret” if you buy their shit?
It’s pretty tempting to buy into said ad when it promises to solve your xyz problem in xyz amount of time.
Well, today I’m going to let you in on a little “secret” that will help you relieve stress, boost your energy, help you get stronger, and even get rid of many of your aches and pains…for free!
It’s something that so many people overlook, but it’s one of the best things you can do to feel better in like 30 seconds.
So take a shot of vodka, splash of grenadine….
Ha, you know that was your first thought, wasn’t it??
OK, OK, I meant club soda, it’s got less sugar.
But seriously, the one OTHER “secret” thing you can do to feel better instantly is…..
“Really Paul, that’s your big secret?! WTF?! I breathe all day long!”
It’s true, we all need to breathe to, ya know, stay alive, but what most don’t know is that there is a RIGHT way and WRONG way to breathe.
Think about when your doctor tells you to “take a big breath in”. You fill up your chest like a drill instructor, right?
Well, truth be told, that is precisely the WRONG way to breathe.
Breathing through your chest doesn’t allow your diaphragm to expand, essentially stifling your lungs capacity to oxygenate your blood.
The best way to practice the RIGHT way to breathe, assuming you are sitting down right now, is to first place your hand on your stomach.
Sit up nice and tall, and breathe in through your nose, making sure you push your stomach out as you breathe in.
You should feel your hand move out as you take said breath, and make sure your shoulders don’t rise.
Then take a big, forceful breath out through your mouth as fast as possible, stomach moving in as your push out. You should feel your abs contract as you push the air out.
Rinse and repeat.
What’s cool about this technique is you can literally do it anywhere…..at your desk, in your car, hell, even while you read this awesome email.
And it’s especially helpful if you are having a shitty day, or things are a little more stressful.
Using your diaphragm to breathe instead of your chest activates your parasympathetic nervous system, which is basically the opposite of the “fight or flight” part of your nervous system.
And when you activate your parasympathetic nervous system, your body instantly starts to relax.
Cortisol(stress hormone) levels drop, and you will instantly start to feel better.
Not only that, diaphragmatic breathing also helps with posture(no more achy back), core strength, and overall energy levels.
So give this whole breathing thing a try the next time you are feeling overwhelmed, or just want to practice.
It takes a while to get the hand of, but once you do it can literally change your life.
Now go start breathing better. Like, right now, Seriously, do it, feel better, and thank me later. 😉
